Eve & the Apple

“Let me be your downfall.”
Eve & the Apple is a melodic indie-pop band out of the Twin Cities. They began playing music together back in 2009 when singer Katie Marshal and drummer Richard Crowe paired vocals with backing tracks. They were soon joined by Renee Klitzke (of Me and My Arrow) on cello. The band’s new self-titled EP is a collection of songs meshing distinct classical influences with modernistic style. The songs are playful and somewhat demure. Marshall’s vocals reflect the band’s name, a concoction of feminine, coy innocence with a defiant sense about them. The album plays heavily off a balance between synthetic sounds and sequences and more organic timbres of the cello. This back and forth continues throughout the album from somewhat mechanical vocal harmonies in songs like “Downfall” and “Sacre-Coeur” and sequenced rhythms to dramatic piano lines (namely the ending to “Savor It” and later in “Swallow Burden”) that add a whole new dimension to the band’s sound. The melodies are simple and memorable, and can realistically appeal to a really wide audience. Klitzke’s cello playing ranges from dramatic, ardent lines (“Sacre-Coeur”) to more jaunty melodies (“When He’s Gone”)
Overall Eve & the Apple have established a comfortable middle ground between singer/songwriter and modern electro-pop. Fans of Imogen Heap, The Knife, and Metric should undoubtedly check them out. Eve & the Apple will release their self-titled EP June 17th at the Kitty Cat Klub.
