Beyonce – 4 Album Review

I wanted to do something refreshing and different

Rating: ★★★★★★★½☆☆

It’s been three years since Beyonce released her last album, I Am…Sasha Fierce. Her fourth studio album 4 doesn’t show any lack of creativity as a result of time between projects. Beyonce mentioned she took a break away from the business for a year to live which brought purity to her life. This is the first album released since separating professionally from her manager and father Matthew Knowles. 4 is a time machine album that infuses genres from the 70′s, through the new millennium.

”I wanted to do something refreshing and different. So I mixed genres and drew inspiration from touring, traveling, watching rock bands, and attending festivals” said Beyonce. Two of my favorite tracks on the album, “Party” which features Andre 3000 and “Love On Top” is a testament to her statement. “Love On Top” brings some Stevie Wonder flavor to the album with dazzling synthesizers and horns. The lead single “Run The World (Girls)” is a fun empowering woman anthem, but the weakest on the album. Babyface appears on the album as one of the writers and producers for “Best Thing I Never Had” (which is a great title). Other production credits include Kanye West, The-Dream, Switch, Jeff Bhasker, Diane Warren, Ne-Yo and S1.

4 begins slow with big rock ballad influenced records and gradually intensifying with “Countdown”. Fans can expect to hear all sides of Beyonce from the slow grooves of “Me, Myself, and I” to “Check Up On It”.
