An Evening with Amon Amarth

by: Joe Toeben

Alright let’s just stop right here and get your story straight, if you’ve never seen Amon Amarth live then you can’t tell your buddies how great they really are in concert.  Your first step is going to be to go to the nifty site at the bottom of the page and check their tour dates for the one nearest to your.  Second step? Face palm because the tickets are probably sold out.  On the start of this tour, the first stop, Chicago sold out the night of and St. Paul sold out the night before.  The guest lists are crammed and the venues are even more jam-packed.  However this is for good reason because Amon Amarth are doing a tour playing two full sets of ridiculous head banging Viking death metal.  We sat down with Ted Lundstrom, bassist for the band before the show and got a sneak peak at the set list before the show, needless to say it contained some of their best songs for the second set, the first set was dedicated to the new album.

The first set kicked off a little later than expected but it was pleasing to say the least.  Johan was not only spot on with his vocals but he was an entertaining speaker in between songs as well.  The first set consisted of songs strictly from their newest album, Surtur Rising.  Nothing out of the ordinary was present that you wouldn’t find at any other death metal concert.  Bloody noses, fights and a giant circle pit abound I think I counted only a handful of meatheads were thrown out for excessive violence that night.  After what seemed like a blink of an eye (’twas really 15 minutes) Amon Amarth was back on the stage for their second set, the best songs of their remaining albums.  Starting the set off with “Twilight of the Thunder God” and transitioning into the likes of “Masters of War”, “With Oden On Our Side”, “Guardians Of Asgaard” and “Cry Of The Black Birds” it was a good hour and fifteen minute set for sure.  With no opening band and just about 2 hours of Amon Amarth there wasn’t much more one could want after a night like this.  So like I mentioned before if you can, see this band when they come through your area because whether you are a fan of them or not you will be after you see their live performance.
